Canada?<\/h3>\n<p>Efficiency Canada is the national voice for an energy efficient economy. Our mission is to create a sustainable environment and better life for all Canadians by making our country a global leader in energy efficiency policy, technology, and jobs. Efficiency Canada is housed at Carleton University\u2019s Sustainable Energy Research Centre, which is located in turn on the traditional unceded territories of the Algonquin nation.<\/p>\n<h2>What is Demand Side Management?<\/h2>\n<p><b>Energy demand management<\/b>, also known as\u00a0<b>demand-side management<\/b>\u00a0(<b>DSM<\/b>) or\u00a0<b>demand-side response<\/b>\u00a0(<b>DSR<\/b>),<sup id=\"cite_ref-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Energy_demand_management#cite_note-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0is the modification of consumer\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Energy demand\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Energy_demand\">demand for energy<\/a>\u00a0through various methods such as financial incentives<sup id=\"cite_ref-2\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Energy_demand_management#cite_note-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0and behavioral change through education.<\/p>\n<p>Usually, the goal of demand-side management is to encourage the consumer to\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Energy saving\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Energy_saving\">use less energy<\/a>\u00a0during\u00a0<a title=\"Peak demand\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peak_demand\">peak<\/a>\u00a0hours, or to move the time of\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Energy use\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Energy_use\">energy use<\/a>\u00a0to off-peak times such as nighttime and weekends.<sup id=\"cite_ref-3\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Energy_demand_management#cite_note-3\">[3]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Peak demand management does not necessarily decrease total\u00a0<a title=\"Domestic energy consumption\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Domestic_energy_consumption\">energy consumption<\/a>, but could be expected to reduce the need for investments in networks and\/or\u00a0<a title=\"Electricity generation\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Electricity_generation\">power<\/a>\u00a0plants for meeting peak demands. An example is the use of energy storage units to store energy during off-peak hours and discharge them during peak hours.<sup id=\"cite_ref-4\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Energy_demand_management#cite_note-4\">[4]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><b>We are also working on demand side management\u00a0on electricity. We are writing to strongly urge you to ask the Ontario Energy Board to increase natural gas energy efficiency programs in Ontario to meet the targets in your Made.in-Ontario Environment P\/an. These programs are a rare opportunity to lower energy bills, create jobs, cut carbon emissions, and stimulate our economy.
